Becoming a member of PhotoWalk.Me is very simple and is the only way you can organize or sign up to photo walks. There are two methods for becoming a member:
Register with your email address. Visit the registration page and fill in the details. All you need is your name, an email address, a username and a password. Once you've submitted the form you will recieve an email to confirm your account. Once you've confirmed your account you'll have full access to the site.
-
Login with a social media account. You can currently login to the site with a Twitter, Facebook or Google account, please make sure you sign in with the same one each time you visit the site. Visit the login page and click the button for the social media provider you want to use.
You will be redirected to the providers account to give PhotoWalk.Me permission to access some of your data. Once authorized you will be returned to PhotoWalk.Me to finish the sign in process.
If your provider doesn't provide a username you will be asked to enter one. With this method you will not receive a confirmation email.
Once logged in tell us a bit more about your self by visiting your profile from the top menu, by clicking on your username and then 'My Profile'. From that page you can edit your profile and add a website address, your twitter handle and a small bio so that other members can get to know you.
Important Notes: If you decide to login with a social media provider we will only get your email address, name, link to a profile image and username(if available). We will not access your feeds or any other personal information.
The email address that you either supply us when registering or we get from your social media provider will only be used for system notifications such as changes/cancellation of a photo walk, new sign ups etc. We will not use it for marketing purposes. If would like to receive news of updates and new features by email then sign up to the mailing list from the home page.
Organizing a photo walk is as easy as becoming a member. All you need to organize your own photo walk is a location, a date and a time. PhotoWalk.Me now supports both free and paid photo walks.
Free vs. Paid Photo Walks
You can organize two types of photo walks on PhotoWalk.Me:
- Free Photo Walks: Available to all members, these are the traditional photo walks where participation is free of charge.
- Paid Photo Walks: These require attendees to pay a fee to participate. To organize paid photo walks, you must have at least a Premium subscription. With a Premium subscription, you'll need to handle payments yourself through a third-party service. Once the Pro subscription tier becomes available, you'll be able to process payments directly through the PhotoWalk.Me platform.
Let's look at each of the essential elements in detail.
Location
The most important part of organizing a photo walk is the location. A photo walk can be held anywhere, but if you want people to sign up and join you on it you need to make sure the location is interesting enough to photograph. You will also need to know the location well enough to show people who may not have been there before, good spots to take photos. It's also worth bearing in mind when thinking about a route, places to get snacks or a drink and where toilet breaks can be taken.
When you have the location for your photo walk, you need to think about the route you are going to take people. You don't have to have the exact route mapped out, but you should have at least a good idea of where you're going to go.
Date
Choosing a date for a photo walk can be tricky. Choose a date too close and you won't have time to get the word out and people will probably have already made plans. Too far away, people may forget. It's also hard because you don't know what the weather is going to be like on any particular date. Setting a date roughly a month in the future seems reasonable. If the weather turns bad, you can always reschedule.
Time
Don't choose a time too early in the morning, some people might have to travel quite far to get to the location you've chosen. Too late, people may also have a long way to get home too. Sometime around midday is good.
Putting it altogether
The above are only suggestions, it's your photo walk after all and you're free to organize it in any way you wish. The number of people who sign up for your walk will heavily depend on the decisions you make.
Once you have all that decided on and assuming you have already signed up as a member and logged in, you can start organizing your walk on PhotoWalk.Me.
Follow these steps to organize your photo walk:
- Navigate to Organize a Photo Walk in the header or click the previous link and fill in the form.
- Enter a short description for your walk, that contains a rough location.
- Enter your chosen date and start time.
- Enter a rough duration time in hours.
- Enter a starting location, this should be the meeting point. Start typing an address or town/city and select an option from the list that closely matches where you want the meeting point to be. It doesn't have to be exact because once you've selected something a map will appear with a marker.
- Zoom in on the map and drag the marker to where the meeting point should be. This will update the address in the starting location text box.
- The country should be pre-populated from the starting location.
- Enter a maximum number of people you would want to sign up. Remember, more than likely not everyone will show up, so if you only want 5 people to attend it may be worth entering a higher maximum. If you don't mind how many people come, you can leave this field blank for unlimited.
- Finally, enter a longer description, include as much detail as you can. Such as where or if you plan to stop off for food or drink. If it's not obvious from the map where exactly you should be meeting, include more detail here. Then click the Add button.
If you set a maximum limit on attendees and that limit is reached, don't worry - PhotoWalk.Me has a waiting list feature. Users can still express interest by adding themselves to a waiting list. If someone cancels their attendance, all people on the waiting list will be notified simultaneously. They can then sign up on a first-come, first-served basis to claim the available spot. This ensures fairness while maintaining the attendance limit you've set for your photowalk.
Assuming everything was ok on the form, your photo walk will have been added to our database and discoverable on our map on the find page.
You should have been redirected to the view page of your photo walk, this is what other members will see if they happen to find your walk (minus the action links). From this page you can share your walk on social media with the buttons provided or you can copy the short url generated for your walk to share with whoever you wish.
Your walk will automatically be promoted on PhotoWalk.Me's own social media channels.
Anybody who wants to attend your walk will have to become a member of the site first.
Setting Up a Paid Photo Walk
If you have a Premium or higher subscription, you can organize paid photo walks. Here's what you need to know:
- Premium Tier: You must arrange your own payment collection through a third-party service (like PayPal, Venmo, etc.). You'll need to provide payment instructions to attendees after they register.
- Pro Tier (Coming Soon): When available, Pro subscribers will be able to collect payments directly through PhotoWalk.Me, simplifying the process for both organizers and attendees.
- When creating a paid photo walk, you'll need to set a price per attendee and provide clear details about what's included in the fee.
- Be sure to explain what value attendees will receive for their payment (e.g., specialized instruction, access to unique locations, equipment loans, etc.).
Things to remember
You are organizing a walk for free, so you are not obliged to provide anything during the walk unless you want to. Your sole responsibility is to show people around an area you are familiar with and meet new people. If you want to offer anything extra, you can, but if you put it in the long description you should honor anything you promise.
You will possibly be meeting up with people that you haven't met before, please be courteous and welcoming. Try if you can to get to know the people that sign up, follow them on Twitter or Facebook and start a conversation. This site was designed to be a community. Any unacceptable behavior from either an organizer or an attendee will be banned from the site.
On the day of the walk, share your mobile number with the attendees. If someone gets lost they will need a way to contact you. The larger the group the harder it will be to keep track of everyone, maybe print out a map with meetup points marked on it (pubs make great meeting points) and give them out.
Lastly, try to make it fun, make friends and take great photos.
If you find a photo walk you want to attend either through the site's find page or a link shared on social media, signing up to attend is as simple as clicking a link. Before you do though, make sure you really are going to be able to attend on the date and time specified on the photo walks page. Some photo walks have limited spaces and it's unfair to take a place if you're not going to be able to attend.
If you still want to attend click the sign up link on the photo walks page, read the disclaimer and if you are happy to continue, click the confirm button.
Free vs. Paid Photo Walks
PhotoWalk.Me now offers both free and paid photo walks:
- Free Photo Walks: These are open to all members and don't require any payment to participate.
- Paid Photo Walks: These require a fee to attend. Depending on the organizer's subscription level, you may need to pay through a third-party service (for Premium organizers) or directly through the PhotoWalk.Me platform (for Pro organizers, once that tier becomes available).
When signing up for a paid photo walk, you'll receive information about payment methods and what's included in your fee. Be sure to read all details carefully before completing your registration.
Things to remember
The photo walks on PhotoWalk.Me are provided for free, by people volunteering to show possible strangers around their local area.
The organizers are not expected to provide anything, other than what is specified in the long description on the photo walk page. If the description doesn't mention a stop for food, there probably isn't one. Either bring your own food or drink on the day or contact the organizer to confirm.
Meet interesting people, have fun, drool over other people cameras and take great photos.
SAFETY
This is important. When signing up for a photo walk, you are agreeing to meet people you may not have met before. Please take appropriate precautions, make sure someone knows where you are going and who you are meeting. Have a mobile phone with you and make sure it is fully charged. Try to connect with the organizer and other attendees via social media before the walk and get to know who you will be meeting.
As per the terms of service that was agreed to when becoming a member of PhotoWalk.Me, this site cannot be held responsible for the interactions that happen in the real world, it is your own responsibility to take the correct precautions.
Inappropriate or abusive behavior from any party will not be tolerated and will result in the banning from this site.
Please report any incidents of inappropriate or abusive behavior by sending an email to info@photowalk.me and it will be dealt with as quickly as possible.
