For the next walk, we'll explore Abney Park, one of the Magnificent
Seven of London graveyards, now (largely) left to run wild... think
autumnal colours (hopefully), an outstanding collection of stone angels,
an atmospheric disused chapel, a lion, and probably lots of squirrels. abneypark.org/
If
we don't get too lost in the jungle, we'll also explore the quirks of
Stoke Newington, one of those London villages that has always had a lot
of personality.
There will be opportunities for people
photography as we walk along Church Street, heading toward the Town Hall
and Clissold Park. We'll swing by the deer enclosure, then have a look
at the grandiose Victorian water pumping station, now the Castle
climbing centre.
We finish by taking the New River Path alongside
the West Reservoir - hopefully we'll see some of the sailing or other
watersports - and end at Manor House tube station.
Start point : 1pm at Stoke
Newington Train Station (Zone 2). You will need to take a TfL London
Overground train from Liverpool Street. It takes about 20 minutes, so
you can get the 1215, 1230 or even the 1245 departure.
Or you can
take a frequent 28 minute bus ride (number 149) from Liverpool Street,
through gentrifying Dalston, and marvel at the beautiful tiling on the
Aziziye mosque as you go by (on the left).
End point : Manor House - Piccadilly line
(zone 2 and 3), one stop north up from Finsbury Park (where you can
change for Victoria and train services. The Victoria Line into central
London is faster, and the interchange takes about 30 seconds.)
Shorter route
The full route (including meandering around Abney Park) will be about 4.5 kilometres. If
anyone wants to come along for just Abney Park (approx 2 km in total),
it's easy to head back to Stoke Newington train station - or jump on the
73 bus back to Angel / King's Cross
Food, drink and facilities : You can't move for cafes and bakeries in Church Street; there are public toilets in Clissold Park. Depending on timings we might stop for a drink at the Rose and Crown or the Clissold House cafe.
Footwear
Paths at Abney Park will be muddy - so don't wear your best dress shoes.
